Open call for young female artists in the field of visual arts to participate in art residency in Croatia.

Within the project entitled Rise of women in culture in Western Balkans, a residency program for female artists working in the field of visual arts is going to take place from 3rd to 18th of May 2022 in Zadar, Croatia.

The residency program will provide space and conditions for individual and collective creation and production of artworks, exchange of knowledge among young female artists and curators. When completing the residency program, artists will have the opportunity to participate in the process of setting up artworks in virtual reality using VR technology. Artworks created during the residential program will become an integral part of the collective exhibition in physical and virtual reality. During the two-week residency program, a panel discussion is going to take place with the focus on the current position and role of women on the independent cultural scene and in the creative and cultural industries sector. Also, a study visit to the actors of the independent cultural scene, cultural and creative industries in Zadar County will be organised. The residency program has a focus on young female artists and the Youth Centre in Zadar is going to be visited during the program.

The residency includes

A scholarship of 250 euros in gross amount.

Covered travel expenses.

Free accommodation in single rooms in a three-star hotel and three meals a day.

Free monthly ticket for urban public transport.

Space to work in.

Material for work.


Criteria of eligibility

Eligible are:

Female artists active in the field of visual arts.

Candidates aged between 22 and 28 at the time of application (including 1994 and 2000 as the year of birth).

Artists residing in Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia or one of the Member States of the European Union.

Participant applications are free of charge.

Applications must be submitted in English, using an online application form that is an integral part of the call, by the deadline, as set out in the open call for application.

Applications must contain all the information requested in the application form.

Selected artists will need to sign a contract with organiser of the activity.

Selected artists will need to pay a registration fee for participation in the amount of EUR 100 when signing the contract.

Selected artists are obliged to participate in the residency for the full duration specified in the call.

Artworks created during the residential program will be returned to the artists at the end of the exhibition at the expense of the organiser of the residential program.

Work Theme

The theme of the artwork is free. The name of the planned virtual and physical exhibition is Rise of Women. The Rise of women in culture in Western Balkans project encourages a female angle of observation and reaction to reality through artistic creation. How to apply?

Fill out the application form here.

Send a minimum of 3 or a maximum of 7 works. It is possible to send 1 photo of each work, and in case it is a sculpture, installation, or other object, it is necessary to send 3 photos of the artwork taken from different camera angles.

Submit a suggestion of the artwork you would create/plan to create on the residency (maximum 500 characters).

Send a copy of your ID card or passport that clearly shows your date of birth and address of residence.

After submitting the application, you will receive a confirmation to the e-mail address specified in the application within 24 hours.

What if I'm selected?

It is necessary to sign a contract with the organiser of the activity.

A registration fee of EUR 100 must be paid.

Arranging travel in communication with the organiser.

Participation in the residency program from 3rd to 18th of May 2022.

Participation in a study visit on the 14th of May 2022.

Participation in the roundtable and networking on the 15th of May 2022.

Participation in VR recording of artworks on the 17th and 18th of May 2022.
